HMS Tetrarch

Mayfield WI has proudly continued to honour the memory of a Royal Navy submarine they ‘adopted’ during the Second World War. And as you enter St Dunstan’s, in an alcove on the left, you will see a Roll of honour and plaque remembering all lives lost in late October 1941. Sailing from Malta via Gibraltar, she was presumed lost on Italian mines off Capo Granditola, Sicily, Italy.

Fresh flowers have been kindly provided weekly in St Dunstan’s since then by the WI, and it is understood that Mayfield is the only village to keep this tradition in memory of a ship’s company. Please feel free to write in the accompanying book a reflection or prayer. On the last Sunday of October the crew are prayed for at our Parish Mass and their courage remembered.
